Our generation has the greatest risk for Hepatitis C. It wasn't until 1992 that a test to identify Hepatitis C was developed. Before that year there was no test for the disease and no way insure blood products were free of the virus. In fact, the virus wasn't identified until 1989. As a result, not only blood transfusions but all products from tissue and blood were at risk for contaminating us. Medical practices were naive. Infection control methods in medical practice began the practice of 'universal precautions' as blood borne pathogens like Hepatitis C and especially HIV were recognized. Aging Baby Boomers will be stunned by this disease. Testing is our only line of defense. There is no vaccine. There are no symptoms. 45% of baby boomers who test positive for the virus have no known source. Get tested now. Treatment is available. Don't spend the rest of your life chronically ill and looking for a liver donor. Just get the test.
